the word, developing programs, working with media and more.
Many
of these volunteers are dynamic CUSO Alumni who bring the richness

Volunteer Profile: Amanda Koyama,
Alberta
Amanda became involved with CUSO in the Spring of 2003, when she
attended CUSO’s innovative and vibrant Fair Trade Festival
in Calgary. She quickly became a fixture in CUSO’s Calgary
office, where she researched fair trade issues and planned the “fair
trade fashion event of the summer.” With the support and encouragement
of Traci Dunlop, CUSO’s Outreach Leader for the West, Amanda
immersed herself fully in CUSO’s vision and work, and was
soon elected as a member of CUSO’s legislative body.
With the Fall and the start of another school year fast approaching,
Amanda found herself longing to remain within the CUSO family. It
was then that she made the extraordinary decision to postpone her
studies for a year in order to continue her volunteer work with
CUSO in Canada. Working part-time at The Keg restaurant to make
ends meet, Amanda applied to the restaurant’s “Spirit
Foundation Chairman’s Award” – an opportunity
offered to Keg staff who donate their time to charitable organizations
in their community. Amanda’s volunteerism effort earned her
an honourable mention, and a cheque for $1,000, which she promptly
turned over to CUSO to further its public engagement work. This
year, Amanda did it again--this time winning the Keg’s coveted
$5000 award.
The contribution and expertise of volunteers such as Amanda are
what make CUSO’s work in Canada possible. Amanda’s demonstrated
leadership and commitment to global social justice is ongoing.
