HEALTH
AND SAFETY
In many of the
countries in which CUSO works, the medical facilities are not necessarily
comparable with Canadian medical systems. Many of our placements
are rural, and may not offer convenient transportation options. Experience
has shown that a CUSO posting cannot provide adequate medical attention
for people with conditions such as unstable asthma, alcohol or drug
dependencies, heart conditions, cancer, insulin dependent diabetes,
obesity, uncontrolled epilepsy, and some chronic psychiatric conditions.
Some countries have other health restrictions, such as:
| • |
a negative HIV test, |
| • |
a negative chest x-ray for Tuberculosis |
| • |
allergic to eggs and therefore unable
to be vaccinated against yellow fever. |
Prior to the CUSO interview, you will be sent the full placement description,
the Foreign Affairs Canada Country Travel Report, and the Cooperant Policy Manual.
Each of these documents has crucial information about health conditions in your
destination country, and about CUSO’s health and insurance policies. Please
read them thoroughly. For up-to-date information on both health and safety considerations,
